Anatomy of … a Winning LinkedIn Profile

Boost Your Network with LinkedIn

More than 70 percent of recruiters turn to Linked- In when they’re looking for top candidates. Here’s how to ensure that your LinkedIn profile gets their attention.

Take a professional photo.

Make sure your picture is not grainy or blurry, and leave the sexy photos for Facebook or other social media sites. “This is your first introduction to someone,” says Lisa Andrews, founder of Look Forward Career Coaching in Virginia. “You want to present yourself in the most professional way.”

Use industry buzzwords.

Look for keywords in job descriptions in your field. Then include those in your profile’s headline and skills section “so you’re really speaking the language of the industry,” Andrews says. Stay away from general terms such as “proven leader.” “Make sure your keywords aren’t phrases that could be used for any job.”

Provide a three-part summary.

Think of the summary as an elevator pitch with three distinct sections, Andrews says. Include something about your past, a bit about what you’re doing in the present, and then a tad of information about the types of positions you’re looking for in the future. Also, when talking about past roles, emphasize accomplishments instead of duties and responsibilities.

Maintain an active profile.

Post content a couple of times a week that is relevant to your network or to a potential recruiter. Your posts go out to your connections and their connections if they like it or share it, expanding your reach.

Collect endorsements and recommendations.

When others vouch for your ability to perform a certain skill, those endorsements can boost your profile. Recommendations—personal testaments about your skill level or job performance—are even more valuable, according to Andrew. “Whoever’s recommending you can say very specific things about your work product.”

List professional successes.

Share notable achievements such as promotions, new certifications, high-profile projects, and awards received. “All of that boosts your cachet in the market,” says Andrews.
